On 8 July, a breakthrough was made by the Gauteng police who arrested one suspect in connection with the Katlehong tavern shooting. The Katlehong shooting is one of several consecutive shootings at various taverns across the country. A group of gunmen reportedly entered the Mputlane Inn tavern and randomly opened fired at patrons, resulting in at least four wounded and two killed. The police have confirmed the suspect as an Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officer.

According to Gauteng police spokesperson,Colonel Dimakatso Sello, the suspect was arrested on Friday. Police did not reveal any further details about the arrest, saying the investigation is ongoing, “At this stage, no further information can be revealed as the investigation is still ongoing, but we can confirm that there is one person arrested in connection to the murder case in Katlehong, and the suspect is expected to appear before Palm Ridge Court on 25 July 2022.”
EMPD spokesperson Kelebogile Thepa said the arrested officer had been on leave at the time of his arrest. Furthermore, the officer said he would be suspended and an internal disciplinary process would take place pending the outcome of the judicial process, as per News24.
