The Western Cape Minister of Agriculture Dr Ivan Meyer has expressed shock and sorrow over the murder of farmer Willem van der Westhuizen and the attack on his wife, Christine, at their Van Rhynsdorp farm.
Minister Meyer conveyed his deepest sympathies to the family and community, emphasising the devastating impact of such violence on the agricultural sector and its workers.

‘This horrific act of violence comes at a time when many South Africans are preparing to spend time with their loved ones and extend a hand of peace and friendship to friends and their communities,’ he said.
Minister Meyer noted the contribution of the Matzikama Municipality to the West Coast’s economy, noting its R5.7 billion input in 2021.
He said that the area’s agriculture sector is not only a major economic driver but also a critical source of employment, providing over 2 300 jobs.

‘We must safeguard this community, which brings dignity to the lives of thousands of families,’ Meyer stressed.
Dr Meyer strongly condemned the attack, labelling it a threat to economic growth and job creation.
He urged law enforcement agencies to swiftly apprehend the perpetrators, ensuring they face justice. This incident, he said, is a harsh reminder of the need for continued vigilance in protecting the agricultural community and its members.
‘Criminality undermines the growth of our economy and job creation. I am therefore calling on our law enforcement agencies to track down the alleged perpetrators so that they can face the full might of the justice system,’ concluded Minister Meyer.
