Just over three weeks ago, the Animal Welfare Society of SA (AWS SA) confiscated a family of badly abused and severely neglected dogs from a proverbial “house of horrors” in New Woodlands, Mitchells Plain.
The confiscation took place after the welfare received a complaint of an elderly woman who allegedly said, “All the dogs must die and nobody must give them food or water.”
Since then, the AWS SA has opened an animal cruelty case against the alleged 67-year-old abusive owner who is now on the run as she faces serious criminal charges.
Police have also now issued a warrant for her arrest and a Senior Public Prosecutor is busy reviewing AWS SA’s case file, while the welfare has been busy treating wounds and focusing their attention on the rehabilitation of the neglected dogs.

Comeback:
After just one week of being in the care of AWS SA, the once “down and out” trio are making a miraculous comeback! The first step that the Animal Welfare Society of SA took was naming them.
“We decided on Jewel for the Mum and Taylor and Angel for her puppies. It took a few days before they responded to their names but now there’s no stopping them, and to say that they have blossomed in our care would not be an exaggeration,” AWS SA said.
All of them have done so well that there is no reason for AWS SA to extend their stay in kennels. All the shelter now needs to complete this remarkable transformation is for someone to offer them a loving forever home.
They were so frightened and traumatised when the Animal Welfare Society of SA initially admitted them that they felt it is necessary to keep them together, but over the past couple of weeks they have really come into their own and the shelter does not foresee any issues with them being adopted separately.
No gift can compete with the amount of unconditional love these three girls have to give and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, the Animal Welfare Society of SA cannot think of a more befitting occasion to promote their adoption.
Please call Lawrence, their resident Cupid, on (021) 692 2626 or email [email protected] if you would like to adopt these or any of the over 40 dogs and puppies looking for their forever homes.
