During an analysis of the ENATIS system, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) uncovered more than 40 000 ID numbers of deceased people that are being used fraudulently to renew vehicle licenses, as announced by the Presidency.
According to Eyewitness News, Presidency officials “gave parliament watchdog Scopa an update on SIU proclamations and investigations on Tuesday”.
As it turns out, the trucking industry appears to be the main culprit of this fraudulent use of ID numbers, seemingly to avoid paying fines.
To rectify the situation, there is now a process to remove these ID numbers from the system, as stated by Jonathan Timm from the department of planning, monitoring and evaluation based in the Presidency.
“And there’s quite an interesting back story about how the SIU have identified a kind of scam that utilises the transferring of money owed to deceased ID numbers on the ENATIS database, thus allowing a kind of cleansing of the system,” Timm reported.
Timm also informed Scopa that there is an “analysis of PPE disciplinary cases on the government payroll system” that revealed the fact that some “officials who resign to avoid sanction are not being properly recorded and are able to get employment elsewhere”.
