With Mother’s Day just a few days away, we hope you have started planning what you are going to do to honour your moms. This year’s Mother’s Day will be celebrated on 8 May, where many South African will be honouring their mothers for the contribution they have made in our lives, families and communities at large.
Following the numerous weekends we’ve had in the month of April, it will be no surprise if many don’t have a sufficient budget to celebrate their boss lady. But worry not we’ve got you, here we list a number of activities you can do on your own or as a family to let your mother know how much she is loved.
For many mothers, a simple thing as spending time with their children is a luxury in a time where the kids have left home, are studying or working away from home or even have their own families to look after. These issues tend to affect the amount of time spent with our mothers and before you know it, it’s been a month and you haven’t seen, kissed or hugged your mother.
Pull out the family album
Many of our mothers had us in a time where there was little to no social media which meant that all the childhood and family memories were stashed in family album that’s laying somewhere in the garage. For this Mother’s Day you can dust out the family album and spend time with mom as she tells you a story about that one picture you don’t like. Watch her face brightens up and crack into a smile as she tell you about that day.
Spoilt her rotten
Most of their lives, Moms dedicate their lives to raising us, taking care of us and making sure that we have everything we need. And even though we are now all grown and independent, they still take care of us, when we are sick we want our mothers, when life’s going gets tougher, we crawl to our Moms who with just a few words of wisdom have us feeling like we can take on anything. This Mother’s Day, let’s change the roles. We know Moms love foot or back rubs, on the day deliver this service to her in a special way. Make her favourite breakfast and while she has it, give her a foot bath, followed with a rub and mini pedicure. The point is to spoil her.
Due to our busy life or work schedule, some might not make it to celebrate the day with their moms in person. But you can do the next best thing, schedule time an hour or more to genuinely talk to your mother. Just make sure you have enough time because we all know moms can talk. If you have children of your own ensure they say their hellos and leave you to enjoy a meaningful conversation with your mom. Let her update you about the latest news in the family, her favourite soupie or what your father, her husband has done to annoy her recently.
Not one for sentimental moments
Sometimes because mothers are the ones who generally dish out all the love and care, they often don’t know how to reciprocate it coming from someone else, you know your mom best. If she’s not one for all the attention, don’t make her uncomfortable with your caring or loving gestures. Try writing her a heart felt letter, yes, a letter, not a text message. In your letter let her know how much you love and appreciate it. Remind her of the childhood memories she might think you have long forgotten, make mention of her cooking skills by mentioning your favourite meal she used to make you. Delivery will be everything on this one, slip it under her pillow before she wakes up or deliver it when dropping her, her favourite breakfast.
