‘I still wanted to come back and use this platform to empower people in my community and young women in South Africa as a whole,’ says Nande Mabala, a Zwelethemba native who was crowned second princess in the Miss South Africa competition on Sunday.

Mabala spent part of her childhood growing up in Zwelethemba, about six kilometres outside Worcester. ‘That’s where the people who raised me come from, and with that, I mean my community.’
Mabala received her crown after entering the competition for the second time; she did not make the selection in 2020, News24 reports.

‘I entered Miss South Africa wanting to be a tangible representation of a dream realized. Thank you for validating me by saying that is exactly what I did on that stage. That you felt represented. I have accomplished what I set out to do. This is why representation is important, that portal is necessary. I will continue my plans with my advocacy Dare 2 Dream to ensure that children in the township’s dreams and stories are not buried there.’
