The South African Police Service‘s (SAPS) crime-combatting strategy has resulted in 1 808 arrests across the Western Cape for serious, violent and other crimes between 14 August and 20 August.

Operation Shanela, a multi-disciplinary strategy aimed at combating crime, was conducted via intelligence-driven, high-density patrols across the province. Operations also included targeting illegal liquor outlets, suspected drug outlets and compliance inspections at licensed liquor outlets.
Of the 1 808 arrests, the following consisted of:
21 wanted suspects,
30 arrests for murder and 23 for attempted murder,
63 arrests were made for property-related crimes such as burglaries and thefts,
240 arrests for assaults with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm,
268 for common assaults, and
437 arrests were affected for an array of other crimes.
Seizures from the same operation include the following:
35 Firearms,
232 various assorted rounds of ammunition,
21kg dagga, and 382 mandrax tablets,
717.6 litres of liquor,
30,13 kg of copper cable and
60 dangerous weapons.

The integrated operations comprised various units, including Vispol, detectives, Crime Intelligence, AGU, POP, law enforcement, other specialised units, K9 Units, private security companies and neighbourhood watch structures.
All the arrested suspects are due to make their court appearances once they have been charged.
