‘It is alleged that on 31 March 2024, a police instructor at a Phillipi Police Training Academy in the Western Cape called a female police trainee to his office and she went to the office after she had several excuses in the past for not going to his office.’
‘It is alleged that the instructor locked the door once the complainant was inside, and raped her. She was allowed to leave after the alleged rape, but she did not report the incident immediately,’ Shuping said.
The police trainee came forward to report the rape several days after the incident occurred. Following the report, a case was filed and subsequently referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) for investigation. On Sunday 21 April, the police training instructor was arrested in connection with the allegations.
‘Ipid arrested the instructor on Sunday 21 April on a charge of rape. He appeared in the Wynberg Magistrates Court on Monday 22 April, and the case was postponed to 2 May for a formal bail application,’ Shuping said.
Earlier this month, a Western Cape police captain, Andre Bekkies, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of a 14-year-old girl. Bekkies, formerly assigned to the SAPS’s Protection and Security Services, was convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault in the Parow Magistrates’ Court. According to Shuping, a case was brought to the attention of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) after allegations surfaced that Bekkies had assaulted a 14-year-old girl on 13 December 2019, around 8pm.
