Professor Muhammed Haron, the son of anti-apartheid activist Imam Abdullah Haron, has set his sights on being the running candidate for the premiership of the Western Cape in the upcoming general elections next month.
He will be representing the Al Jama-ah party, as reported by News24.

Haron, a researcher, lecturer and author, is an expert in Islamic studies, Arabic and international relations. The party believes that he is a strong candidate to ‘head the provincial government’.
‘While dedicating his life to the pursuit of knowledge and to gaining a deeper understanding of the values and principles espoused by the Qur’an and the prophetic practices, the professor embodies trustworthy leadership,’ the party said on Monday, 22 April.
The party further stated that his lived experiences as Imam Haron’s son during apartheid, added ‘impetus and depth to his commitment to justice, education, research and community activism’.
Haron’s father was tortured to death by the apartheid Security Branch while in detention in 1969, which was ruled by an inquest last year.
Among his goals, Haron has stated that he aims to collaborate with the private sector to look at how ‘prices could be capped’ so that residents could keep up with the rising cost of living.
‘All efforts should be made to distribute resources equally where possible to overcome the issues that our communities encounter,’ said Haron.
Al Jama-ah had previously made a breakthrough during the 2019 national and provincial elections, by winning one seat in the Western Cape legislature.
