In Monday night’s address to the nation, President Cyril Ramaphosa declared that 15 December would now be recognised as a public holiday.
In his address, President Ramaphosa emphasised the significance of this new public holiday. It symbolises not just a day off from work but also a day of hope and unity for the nation. As South Africa has navigated through numerous challenges in recent years, the need for a symbol of unity has become increasingly apparent.
15 December is set to be that symbol – a day when the nation can come together to celebrate, reflect and reaffirm their commitment to a brighter future.
The President acknowledged that many South Africans have been longing for an additional public holiday, especially given the challenges faced in the past years. However, he also recognised the importance of allowing matrics to focus on their exams.
In addition to announcing the new public holiday, President Ramaphosa expressed his enthusiasm for the Springboks’ return. He personally committed to receiving the victorious team at the Union Buildings.
He urged the nation to throw their support behind the Proteas, highlighting the tremendous power of sports to unite the people of South Africa.
Ramaphosa also pointed to the ongoing reforms aimed at stimulating economic growth. He assured the nation that measures were in place to stabilise national debt.

Furthermore, Ramaphosa’s address touched on concerns such as corruption, local government and infrastructure. Laws, institutions and practices are being implemented to combat corruption effectively, with progress already visible.
Energy security has been another area of focus, with an observable reduction in the severity of loadshedding over recent months. President Ramaphosa expressed his optimism about ending loadshedding and improving the nation’s energy stability.
Water infrastructure will receive substantial investment, including upgrades to water treatment works and pumping stations, promising improved access to clean water for all South Africans.
The President noted the positive developments in restoring commuter rail operations, which will alleviate transportation expenses for many citizens. An investment of R50 billion will be channelled into upgrading the passenger rail network.
Additionally, President Ramaphosa highlighted significant infrastructure projects that are currently underway. These projects have not only generated employment opportunities but also set the stage for future growth and development.
As President Ramaphosa concluded his address, he drew parallels between South Africa’s recent sporting victories and the nation’s journey toward economic recovery. He highlighted that, as a united people, South Africans have shown extraordinary resilience, determination and an unwavering commitment to progress.
