President Cyril Ramaphosa is optimistic about the prospects of achieving peace in the Middle East, drawing inspiration from South Africa’s own successful journey towards reconciliation following the end of apartheid.
President Ramaphosa is set to attend a peace summit in Egypt, where he aims to address the escalating situation in the Middle East. He places strong emphasis on the necessity of humanitarian assistance and the resumption of peace talks to bring about a resolution to the ongoing crisis.
The Presidency released a statement expressing the President’s deep concern for the attacks on civilians, the devastating loss of life, mass displacements and the humanitarian crisis that has severely impacted the Gaza Strip.
During a speech at the Presidential Imbizo in the North West, President Ramaphosa confirmed South Africa’s participation in the peace summit. He also highlighted South Africa’s recognition as a country capable of aiding the current situation.

‘It speaks to South Africa’s standing with regard to how we are perceived and the fact that some people and leaders think that we can make a contribution. We do believe that we can make a contribution.’
‘Our own history and what we have gone through—when we look at what is unfolding, there is a history and an experience that can be brought to bear in terms of trying to resolve those conflicts that seem intractable.’
South Africa’s transformation from a nation on the brink of a devastating civil war to a beacon of reconciliation is a message of hope that President Ramaphosa intends to share with the Middle East.
Furthermore, the South African Cabinet has called for the International Criminal Court to investigate war crimes in the ongoing conflict. President Ramaphosa has expressed South Africa’s willingness to actively participate in peace efforts in the Middle East for the past two weeks.
