On Friday, a taxi driver helped Cape Town’s law enforcement nab two robbery suspects.
According to the City of Cape Town’s Myaco member for safety and security, JP Smith, members of the Traffic Service’s Transport Enforcement Ghost Unit were on patrol when they spotted a taxi driver disregard a directional arrow at the intersection of Rosmead Avenue and Chichester Road.

‘Officers were surprised, as the driver had clearly spotted them before committing the offence,’ says Smith.
However, when the officers stopped the driver and questioned him, the driver revealed that two men who had boarded the vehicle earlier, threatened him and demanded money from the rest of the passengers.
He claimed that the men were armed.
‘Officers immediately arrested the two suspects, and a search revealed that both were armed with knives,’ Smith adds. ‘They also had drug paraphernalia in their possession.’
The suspects, aged 21 and 33, were detained at the Claremont police station on charges of robbery, intimidation and possession of dangerous weapons.
Officers also interviewed the passengers, who confirmed what the taxi driver claimed. Although no one was harmed, they were shaken by the incident.
