Authorities, including the police, firefighters and Emergency Medical Services (EMS), were called to the school due to reports of student disturbances.
IOL reported that seven students were apprehended by the police. At that moment, Bronagh Hammond, spokesperson for the Western Cape Education Department (WCED), stated that the group of learners had caused disruption by hurling flour bombs, eggs and bricks, resulting in the breaking of multiple window panes, damage to doors and the activation of fire extinguishers.
A school staff member suffered a head injury, while three students needed medical assistance.
The school had no choice but to activate its emergency protocols, leading to the deployment of rescue services.
Hammond said the school’s internal inquiry is ongoing, and hearings are scheduled to occur in the coming week or thereabouts – ‘The learners are presently allowed to write their exams under supervision.’
She also mentioned that the school has already handled the necessary repairs totalling R20,000.
In a prior statement, Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi had indicated that the Mowbray police were conducting an investigation into an incident of malicious damage to property involving a private vehicle.
