According to statistics presented to the Portfolio Committee on Police on Tuesday morning, violent crimes increased by 4% between January and March of this year when compared to the same period last year.
According to police statistics presented to the Portfolio Committee on Police on Tuesday morning, there were 6 289 murders in those three months, as reported by News24. In the previous quarter, there were 7 555 reported murders.

Between January and March, 13 205 sexual offences were reported. This is a decrease from the previous quarter’s total of 15 545, with 13 205 of these crimes reported during the three-month period.
Attempted murders increased by 8.4% between January and March, with 6 192 attempted murders recorded between January and March, compared to 7 016 between October and December.
The number of assaults with the intent to cause serious bodily harm increased by 0.7% to 43 090, while the number of common assaults increased by 7.6% to 49 226.
Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased by 5.1% to 34 460, while common robbery increased by 8.9% to 11 744.
According to News24, following the receipt of the crime statistics by the Portfolio Committee on Police, IFP MP Zandile Majozi stated:
‘We can’t have an increase in murder all the time. It cannot be that we continue with the situation that we have.’
Police Minister Bheki Cele told the committee, ‘No matter how hard we try, if we have not managed to prevent the death of a single South African through criminality, we have not reached our destination.’
He reportedly stated that they have reached a tipping point and will not return to the ‘dark days.’
