The incident led to the hospitalisation of one of the cyclists, Dewald van der Westhuizen, who is still receiving treatment.
According to News24, Pasha faced charges of reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence of alcohol and attempted murder.
He appeared in the Simon’s Town Magistrate’s Court dressed in a grey tracksuit, with the State prosecutor proposing a bail amount of R10 000, which the State had no objection to.
The incident, captured by various road cameras, happened as the cyclists diverted their usual route due to a wildfire. Van der Westhuizen, 26, was hit by a speeding white VW Polo, causing severe injuries.
The impact also affected his coach, Mike Moriarty, 57, who described the collision as causing substantial harm.
Despite community outcry, the court opted to grant Pasha bail, requiring him to adhere to strict conditions, including surrendering his driver’s license and refraining from driving. The case is set for further investigations on 16 February.
