In addressing these concerns, Taplin cautioned all mountain users to limit activities on Signal Hill and Lion’s Head to the hours between sunrise and sunset.
The letter reads, ‘We understand the allure of these locations, especially during sunrise and sunset, but recent incidents have highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures.
To ensure the well-being of all participants, we strongly urge that activities on Signal Hill and Lions Head be limited to the hours between sunrise and sunset.’

Furthermore, the letter requests that operators discourage visitors from engaging in full moon or evening hikes on Lion’s Head, citing compromised safety due to increased crime during the evening and early morning.
This safety measure aims to allow visitors to enjoy the breathtaking views of the mountains while still ensuring their safety during times when criminal activities may be more prevalent.
The letter states that safety and security measures are in place through collaborative efforts involving SANParks, the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement, the South African Police Services, and other stakeholders.
‘We want to reassure you that safety and security measures are in place with strong collaborative efforts between SANParks, the City of Cape Town Law Enforcement, the South African Police Services and many other stakeholders, but it is essential to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing the rising crime rates.
‘Cooperation between tour operators, local authorities, and law enforcement is crucial to maintaining the integrity of these experiences and safeguarding the reputation of Cape Town as a premier tourist destination.’
