Santaco has addressed Minister Mackenzie from the Ministry of Mobility in the Western Cape regarding the ongoing issues stemming from the provincial taxi stay-away that was initiated on 3 August, 2023.
The Santaco leadership has been in discussions with the City of Cape Town and the Department of Mobility to address challenges related to the impoundment of minibus taxis.
The organisation specified its support for lawful impoundments based on the National Land Transport Act, covering instances such as unroadworthy vehicles, vehicles without valid operating licenses and those driven by drivers lacking valid licenses and PDP.
However, the organisation opposes impoundments for reasons beyond these statutory provisions, often observed during enforcement drives by the City of Cape Town and Alderman JP Smith.

Santaco has engaged with various departments, emphasising that while they accept impoundments as per the NLTA, they resist impoundments unrelated to the relevant legislation. The organisation has consistently called for a moratorium on all impoundments until a resolution is reached on these issues and law enforcement operations.
