Police in the Western Cape are continuing their quest to confiscate illegal firearms in the province after they arrested several suspects over the weekend for being in the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
SAPS’ latest efforts saw a 32-year-old man arrested after he was caught with a 9mm pistol with no serial number in Lugmag Street Factreton on Saturday, October 30. According to police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg, a joint police stop and search operation was held in the Cape Town cluster when the suspect was searched and the firearm was found in his possession.

Twigg says the suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court on charges of possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition on Tuesday, November 2.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated incident, members of Ravensmead police were busy escorting IEC officials when they heard gunshots going off. Twigg added that when officers drove in the direction of the sound of the gunshots they, identified a known suspect running with a firearm in his hand.
“The firearm fell and the suspect kept running. The members recovered a 9mm pistol. A discharging of a firearm case were opened for investigation. The suspect is yet to be arrested and the investigation continues,” Twigg said.
Officers attached to the Western Cape’s Flying Squad Unit also arrested an 18-year-old man after he was found to be in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition in Kraaifontein on Friday, October 29 while a 27-year-old was arrested after he was stopped in what is believed to be a stolen vehicle in Cawdor Street in Saxonsea, Atlantis.
