People the world over are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Some have lost their jobs and are unable to make ends meet and support their families.

While the Western Cape government has rolled out a food parcel feeding scheme for the most vulnerable in our city, the rigorous assessment criteria means that some families don’t qualify even if they are in need.

In this tough time, its important now more than ever to support each other in any way we can.  Luckily, a new movement in South Africa is encouraging us all to do our part to help those in need.

Those requiring food are urged to tie a yellow item such as a ribbon or a t-shirt to their gate. The yellow acts as a signal that you are in need. Those that see the yellow item are encouraged to purchase essential food supplies and leave it at the doorstep of those in need.

In addition to needing grocery items, residents who are feeling afraid for any reason are encouraged to leave their cell number by the yellow ribbon. Anyone who is willing can phone the number to find out how to they can help.

If you know of anyone who needs support in the form of food parcels and you cannot afford to help them, please call the toll-free SASSA Call Centre on 0800 601 011 or the Western Cape SASSA call centre office on 021 469 0235 or email [email protected].
