The Cape of Good Hope SPCA has expressed disappointment with the V&A Waterfront’s decision to host a fireworks display for its New Year’s celebrations.
This move marks a reversal of their 2020 pledge for environmentally friendly events.

Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse highlighted the negative impact of fireworks on both animals and the environment.
‘We urge the V&A Waterfront to reconsider and show genuine concern for animals and the environment by cancelling their planned firework display. They are literally burning money that could be redirected to supporting those in need,’ he said.
The SPCA’s concerns are as follows:
- Air pollution: The display contributes to smoke and toxins in the air, degrading air quality.
- Noise pollution: Animals, particularly those with sensitive hearing, find the loud noises made by fireworks distressing.
- Waste and litter: Remnants from fireworks can harm wildlife, especially if ingested.
- Risk to protected species: The fireworks pose a threat to vulnerable seabird species and protected Cape fur seals in the area.

The SPCA argues that the funds allocated for the fireworks could be more effectively used for animal welfare or supporting underprivileged children in Cape Town.
This decision also contradicts the Threatened or Protected Species Regulation and the City of Cape Town’s by-laws.
The organisation stresses that fireworks are not environmentally friendly, and their use can lead to fear, anxiety, injuries and even death in animals.
The Cape of Good Hope SPCA calls for the V&A Waterfront to align its actions with its previous commitment to the environment and animal welfare.
