‘I am struck by the immense kindness and goodness of our community. Thank you to the Kenilworth neighbours and neighbourhood watch and CID leaders for taking in the very frail and vulnerable residents of Sherwood Home at 1am this morning, and then for driving them to the hotel, for being so gentle and caring, for buying baked goods, serving hot drinks and listening to these very shaken evacuees.’
About 27 residents were evacuated to the Newlands Sun Hotel, two residents were taken to another retirement home for special care, and four residents were taken in by family members. The fire destroyed 11 beds and all belongings in the Victorian wing.
If you’d like to assist the residents, the following items can be dropped off at Sherwood Home tomorrow morning:
- Bedding
- Towels
- Toiletries
- Slippers
- Gowns
- Tracksuits
