Police spokesperon, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, says the workers were robbed at gunpoint. ‘According to reports, armed suspects approached the workers, robbed them of their cellular telephones and a VW Citi Golf, and fled the scene. The suspects are yet to be arrested.’
The attack occurred just one day after four members of the Western Cape’s Social Development Department were nearly hijacked after conducting a crime prevention programme in Khayelitsha on Friday.
Ward Councillor Peter Helfrich says ten armed men robbed the contractors, who were in the process of connecting a 400mm-diameter pipeline to the treatment effluent network between wastewater treatment works in Zandfliet and Macassar.
This was relayed to Helfrich by one of the victims, who wishes to remain anonymous. ‘The victim confirmed that all the men were armed and aggressively explained to them that if they did not cooperate, they would be shot,’ he told News24.
The perpetrators allegedly drove a white 1400 Nissan bakkie.
