According to SANParks, this comes after a female park user was robbed of her belongings while hiking on Lion’s Head on Sunday, 21 January.
The joint operation between rangers, metro police and law enforcement officers resulted in locating and apprehending the suspect, as well as the retrieval of all the victim’s belongings.
The suspect was subsequently arrested and a case has been opened with the South African Police Services (SAPS).
TMNP Manager Megan Taplin commended the efforts of those involved.
‘Thank you to the TMNP Rangers, the City of Cape Town Metro Police and Law Enforcement officers for this joint operation leading to the arrest of a suspect. Our teams will continue to monitor this area and ensure the safety of the park users. Well done to all involved and keep up the exceptional work!’ said Taplin.
The successful apprehension comes after a recent surge in criminal activities on mountain paths and trails raised public concerns during the festive season.
Mountain user Marianne Lancefield, shared on the community Facebook group Friends of Table Mountain that she and eight others were recently mugged at knifepoint by two men during their hike.
The group of nine had walked Llandudno Ravine, Judas Peak and Grootkop and were heading past Slangolie Ravine on their way down when they were ambushed on a narrow cliff path.
The suspect fled the scene with ‘jewellery, phones, watches [and] cash’, said Lancefield.
