At Sonwabe Beach in Muizenberg, two tragic incidents claimed the lives of two men, leaving one person missing after being caught in rip currents.
A frantic scene unfolded when the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) and multiple emergency services responded to a distress call about three people – ages 8, 12 and 18 – struggling against rip currents.
Tragedy struck when an 18-year-old man succumbed despite CPR attempts. Two bystanders courageously aided the 12-year-old, ensuring his safety while attempting to assist a 28-year-old man. The 8-year-old managed to escape the water unaided.

The situation escalated as another distress call, 500 metres away from Sonwabe Beach, reported the drowning of a 24-year-old man. Despite exhaustive attempts at resuscitation, the young man from Manenberg couldn’t be revived, leading authorities to open inquest dockets for both deceased.
While the NSRI, alongside emergency services, continues the search for the missing 28-year-old man, who is believed to be the father of the unassisted 8-year-old, authorities have extended their support and thoughts to the affected families during this distressing period.
Patricia van der Ross, Mayco Member for Community Services and Health, urges beachgoers to prioritise safety, emphasising the necessity of swimming only when lifeguards are present.
Warning against rip currents and heightened sea conditions in the coming days, she reminds the public about the community’s role in maintaining a safe beach environment.
