Just a few days after her 94th birthday, former finance minister Trevor Manuel’s mother Philda Manuel died due to coronavirus-related complications.

Philda passed away at Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town on Thursday, June 18. She is survived by four children, 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Since news of Philda’s passing, tributes have been pouring in from a number of political party members and beyond. During a debate on the Appropriation Bill in the National Council of Provinces, finance minister Tito Mboweni extended his condolences to Manuel.

A funeral service will take place at Cape Town’s Good Shepherd Church in Kensington next week. Restrictions will be placed on the number of attendees due to COVID-19 but a live stream will be made available, with details to be announced at a later date.

The elderly are particularly at risk during the coronavirus pandemic and residents are reminded to do all they can to keep these precious members of our society safe.
