A drug trafficking operation was thwarted this weekend, resulting in the arrest of a 34-year-old man transporting a consignment of mandrax tablets estimated at around R2.7 million to Cape Town.
As per IOL, the suspected drug trafficker is scheduled to appear in the Strand Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 14 November.
According to Zinzi Hani, the provincial spokesperson for the Hawks, the South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau team based in Bellville led the operation in collaboration with the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation’s Hawks and the Western Cape Crime Intelligence’s Counter Narcotics and Gangs.

The arrest was made after police received information about a suspect driving a truck loaded with mandrax tablets from the Eastern Cape to Cape Town. The Hawks’ team identified the vehicle, which then led to its interception and subsequent search.
‘Upon conducting the search, 61 000 mandrax tablets were found hidden in a false compartment inside the truck,’ Hani reported.

This arrest comes on the heels of another recent operation where police in the Western Cape nabbed two men transporting illicit goods from Johannesburg to Cape Town.
Their truck, carrying concealed cargo, was intercepted near the Joostenberg Weighbridge along the N1 highway, heading towards Cape Town.
The large consignment of illegal cigarettes with an estimated street value of R22 million was seized and confiscated on its way to a warehouse in Montagu Gardens.
