A fire has devasted the Joe Slovo informal settlement in Langa, Cape Town, as it continues to burn out of control.
Hundreds of people have been displaced. Cape Town’s fire and rescue teams are currently on the scene with 10 fire engines and seven water tankers being deployed to bring the fire under control. Various law enforcement agencies are also on the scene, including Metro Police, Law Enforcement and Traffic Services, as per News24.
According to Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, the fire reportedly broke out just after 18:00. Carelse also indicated that an “unruly” crowd had formed, while various social media users indicated that explosions could be heard going off, however, nothing has been confirmed by officials.
The cause of the fire remains unclear with no injuries or deaths being reported.
