The City of Cape Town’s water and sanitation directorate said it is currently attending to emergency repairs to a water main in Kloof Road, Camps Bay, after torrential rains and flooding wreaked havoc on the water supply last month.
The 300mm diameter water main was damaged during the Cape storm which occurred over the Heritage Day long weekend between 23 and 25 September.

The directorate said work on the damaged pipeline is anticipated to be completed by 27 October 2023. Residents in these areas are urged to reduce their water consumption during this period to enable an uninterrupted sustainable supply to them.
‘This pipeline was damaged when the incessant torrential downpour during the storm caused subsidence of the embankment which then resulted in a large tree falling on the now exposed pipeline. This subsequently resulted in the disruption of the water supply to Camps Bay, Bantry Bay, Fresnaye and Sea Point,’ said the City.

The City said that the maintenance team, at the time, was able to reroute the water supply from an alternate pipeline to these areas as a temporary measure until the permanent repairs could be done.
However, the recent upturn in weather temperatures has impacted water consumption to the point where the demand in these areas is starting to exceed the supply, thus accelerating the need for the pipeline’s repair.
According to the City, this required the directorate’s technical team to plan for the replacement which involved consulting other City services because the solution was also driven by the decision to reroute the new section of the pipeline to mitigate the recurrence of a similar incident.
The City expressed sincere regrets for any inconvenience caused but added that it is imperative to maintain its water supply infrastructure for the benefit of its customers.
