A 39-year-old man from Worcester in the Western Cape was arrested by members attached to the police’s Anti Gang Unit (AGU) after he was found in the possession of diamonds with an estimated street value of R1, 2 million.
According to a police statement, AGU members was deployed to Worcester in a bid to curb the ongoing violence. Police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi said whilst busy focusing on gang violence, the members then received information pertaining to an unknown male who was on his way to finalising a deal in exchanging diamonds with a local taxi driver.
” When the police spotted the man who fitted the description, they followed him until they approached and searched him, upon which they found him in possession of diamonds with an estimated street value R1, 2 million,” Swartbooi said.

Swartbooi said further that the suspect will make his first court appearance in the Worcester Magistrate court on a charge of possession of illicit diamonds.

Meanwhile, the vigilance of members of the Nyanga Cluster Crime Prevention Unit landed a 17-year-old suspect behind bars when he was arrested for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition in White Hart Lane, The Leagues, in Samora Machel on Friday, October 15.
