As the festive season quickly approaches and holiday mode envelops the Mother City, residents and visitors (both local and international) can be seen flocking outdoors and basking in the sunlight at many of Cape Town’s iconic natural wonders.
With this, however, often comes a noticeable increase in opportunistic criminal activity. According to Table Mountain National Park’s recent safety notice, the organisation has already begun seeing an increase in incidents of pickpocketing reported in the Signal Hill area.

In light of the coming holiday season, Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) management has urged Signal Hill visitors to remain vigilant and follow these important safety guidelines:
- Always be aware of your surroundings – ‘While enjoying the stunning views, please be mindful of your surroundings. Pay attention to the people nearby and be cautious of any suspicious activity.’
- Hold onto your valuables – ‘Do not leave your valuables unattended on the mat area. Keep your belongings secure on your person at all times and consider using anti-theft bags or pouches.’
- Report suspicious behaviour – ‘If you observe any suspicious behaviour or feel uncomfortable, please report it to park rangers or local authorities immediately on 086 110 6417. Your vigilance can help keep the park safe for everyone.’
- Be cautious of individuals offering help or assistance – ‘Pickpockets often work in groups and distraction is one of their tactics.’

Additionally, mountain users’ forum Friends of Table Mountain has teamed up with community safety app BUZZER in a collaborative effort to bolster safety and deter criminal activity in Table Mountain National Park.
The safety app is now active within the park’s boundary, promising improved emergency responses and enhanced safety for all park users through coordinated partnerships with safety services such as SANParks, Wilderness Search & Rescue, the Fire Brigade and SAPS.
Beyond following TMNP’s safety guidelines, all park users are also encouraged to download the BUZZER app, report any incidents timeously and make use of its features as needed.
‘Your safety is our top priority and we want every visitor to have a memorable and secure experience in Table Mountain National Park,’ said TMNP management. ‘By following these guidelines and remaining alert, you can help us ensure a safe and enjoyable visit for all.’
