Firefighters have had their work cut out for them with a blaze on Signal Hill and a fire at Van Der Stel Pass between Grabouw and Botrivier. The Signal Hill fire is currently contained with a few hotspots flaring up every now and then but the flames at Van Der Stel Pass continue to rage.

It has been four days since the fire first ignited at the popular pass. A number of fire agencies, landowners, farm workers, volunteers and local authorities have been working together day and night to fight numerous flanks of a fire stretching from Botrivier to Elgin and a large part of Groenlandberg Nature Reserve as well as it’s surrounding farms.

Local photographer, Justin Sullivan was on scene at Van Der Stel Pass and captured unforgettable images of the ongoing battle against the blaze.

Most of the fire occurred in the veld area and spared the residential property.

The fire in Grabouw has been 60 to 80% contained according to Western Cape local government spokesperson James-Brent Styan but teams will be on site throughout the day.
