There’s no better way to watch a live sports fixture in Cape Town than around a table with your family or friends over some drinks and a bite to eat. Whether it’s rugby, football, cricket or the Olympics, Cape Town has an endless selection of bars and restaurants to get excited about. Here’s a list of four spots that are particularly well-suited to live sports events.
1. The Fireman’s Arms
The Fireman’s Arms on Buitengracht Street is one of Cape Town’s oldest bars, finding its origins all the way back in 1864. It has a traditional British pub feel to it, and is themed around sports and sports teams. The Fireman’s Arms serves delicious pub grub-inspired food and often offers unbelievable drinks specials. I have watched many Bok test matches at Fireman’s and the vibe is always immense, writes Cape {town} Etc’s James Redman.
- Location: 25 Buitengracht St & Mechau St, De Waterkant, Cape Town
2. Devil’s Peak Taproom
Devil’s Peak Taproom is the perfect place to relish in your love for both beer and sport. From the second story of the taproom’s restaurant, you can take in magnificent views of the establishment’s namesake while sipping on a proudly South African craft beer as your sports team takes the field. The food here is also great! I haven’t tasted a lamb burger anywhere else in the country that tops the Taproom’s speciality burger.
- Location: 150 Cecil Rd, Salt River, Cape Town
3. Fat Cactus
Fat Cactus in Gardens is another favourite. Delicious Mexican-inspired cuisine and affordable drinks are always a great combo when it comes to live sports events. Fat Cactus has multiple screens and is well-located should you need to take your celebrations elsewhere after your team’s victory.
- Location: 5 Park Rd, Gardens, Cape Town
4. MOJO Market
MOJO Market in Sea Point is a top tier venue for live sports fixtures. With over 30 different food vendors and a bar that has 100 beers on tap, you are well-equipped to back your team from the comfort of MOJO’s seating area. With the elevated screens and a beer hall like seating plan, the atmosphere is tangible, as if you were in the crowd of your teams stadium.
- Location: 30 Regent Rd, Sea Point, Cape Town

5. Foresters Arms Restaurant and Pub
Located in the leafy suburb of Newlands, Foresters Arms Restaurant and Pub (fondly referred to by the locals as ‘Forries’), is one of the oldest pubs in South Africa. Its welcoming ambiance provides guests with the opportunity to sit down, relax and enjoy a fine draught beer accompanied by a delicious meal selected from the varied gastro-pub menu.
Location: 52 Newlands Ave, Newlands, Cape Town
6. Rascals Pub
Packed with football club memorabilia, unreal pizzas and ice cold beers, this is ‘sports bar’ at its finest. A magical experience surely awaits.
