To say that plastic on our beaches and in our oceans is a problem would be an understatement. The world’s plastic problem is considered one of the biggest ecological disasters of our time.
Approximately eight million tonnes of plastic make their way into our oceans each year, with marine creatures ingesting or entangling themselves in the plastic debris polluting the sea.

Did you know that 67% of sharks ingest plastic?
It can often feel as though one person’s actions will have little effect on the state of our world, but when hundreds of individuals come together, suddenly the effect feels significantly larger.
Thankfully, there are a number of incredible organisations that provide platforms for individuals looking to battle this plastic problem to join forces and synergistically create a cleaner and healthier planet, one beach at a time.
One such organisation is the Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). For more than 35 years, the ICC has galvanised communities across the globe to collect trash from the world’s beaches and waterways, making our coasts cleaner and our oceans healthier.
Thanks to countless volunteers, more than 350 million pounds of trash have been collected around the world.

Since its inception, the ICC has become a popular calendar event in Kommetjie, with locals from all walks of life gathering together under the banner of collectively making a difference.
This year, Table Mountain National Park, in partnership with Curb Beach Plastic, Save Our Seas Foundation and Take Back Our Mountains, will unite to support Ocean Conservancy at their annual worldwide event this Saturday.
Join like-minded individuals for a one-kilometre beach walk to clean up from the Wireless Road parking area to the Long Beach Kakapo shipwreck area and help protect our oceans, sharks and other marine creatures.
Refuse bags and gloves will be supplied by Plastics SA, so all you need to bring are comfortable walking shoes, water, sunblock and passion.
A rewarding sense of achievement and making a difference in creating a cleaner and healthier planet are not all that’s up for grabs this Saturday. There are a few awesome prizes, too.
Join the movement and #SeaTheChange.
