In the bustling city of Cape Town, amid the mountains, velds, forests and gardens, lies a unique culinary haven that seeks to connect people with the natural world around them.
Founded by the passionate wild food artist, forager and foodie, Roushanna Gray, Veld and Sea is more than just a business – it is an immersive educational experience that aims to inspire a deep appreciation for nature’s bounty.
Roushanna Gray’s journey with wild flavours began over 14 years ago when she started exploring the diverse and exciting tastes found in the landscapes of South Africa.
From the coastal rock pools to the enchanting kelp forests, the abundance of delicious and nutritious offerings played a significant role in shaping her culinary creations.
In 2007, Roushanna Gray set up a small wild-flavoured tea garden, igniting her curiosity to delve even deeper into the edible landscape. Fuelled by her children’s adventures with foraged food, she started teaching kids to forage and harvest workshops, which later expanded into workshops for adults.
In 2017, Veld and Sea was officially launched as a full-time venture to share her passion and knowledge with others.

At Veld and Sea, the underlying ethos is to foster reciprocal relationships with the land and the ocean. Through immersive learning experiences and the wonders of nature as their classroom, participants gain a deeper understanding of themselves, the environment and the interconnectivity of all living beings.
Beyond mere sustenance, Roushanna Gray believes that these experiences instil values that go beyond food, nurturing a profound connection with the natural world.
The methodology of Veld and Sea workshops and experiences is hands-on and multi-sensory. Participants listen, immerse, look, gather, smell, create and taste, creating a lasting impact on their knowledge and memories.
