South Africans planning to travel from Cape Town to Johannesburg should expect to pay more than they did last year due to high petrol prices and increased toll costs.

Despite the reprieve in December and January, motorists in South Africa continue to pay significantly more than R20 per litre for petrol.
On February 7, petrol prices will rise by 75 cents per litre, while diesel prices will rise by 70 to 73 cents per litre, bringing the inland price of petrol 95 to R23.24 and diesel 0.005% to R21.43.
The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announced this month that tolls will increase by 6.25% beginning March 1, 2024.

The calculations took the cost of petrol and the expected toll fee increases into account.
Naamsa’s most recent new vehicle sales report was used to select South Africa’s best-selling cars in the selected categories.
The amount of fuel each of these cars consumes, based on the manufacturer’s provided average fuel consumption per 100km, was then calculated.
In each case, the least expensive model from the manufacturer was considered, as well as the cheapest double cab for bakkies. 95 octane (R23.24) and 0.005% diesel prices (R21.43) as of February 2024 were used as comparisons.
Fuel costs were calculated for some of South Africa’s most popular destinations, using Johannesburg/Tshwane as a benchmark. These costs were then added to the current toll rates as of March 1, 2024.
The estimated fuel costs for a trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town ranged between R1 848 and R2 282 with an additional R233 on toll fees, bringing total expenditure to as much as R2 515.
