In an era widely encompassed by exploration, self-discovery and a rise in solo travel, it’s evident that there’s an inexplicable sense of liberation that comes with roaming the earth unescorted.
And, as a woman often suffocated by the patriarchy, societal expectations and controversial opinions, the thrill of solo travel is quite unmatched. But with the shadow of crime and gender-based violence perpetually lurking, where exactly are the best solo travel destinations for women?

According to new data provided by Airbnb, which recorded a 55% increase in British women planning international solo trips using the platform in 2022, Cape Town lies smack in the middle on the list of top ten cities.
Shared in a statement announcing its recent partnership with personal safety app WalkSafe, Airbnb data showed that the Mother City secured number five, coming in behind Paris in first and Dubai in second with Barcelona and Lisbon taking third and fourth places.
While a millisecond glance at the news will undoubtedly confirm that crime does indeed exist in Cape Town, Time Out aptly points out that in a large city that’s home to more than four million people (and a gigantic socioeconomic gap – but that’s for another article), crime is somewhat expected.
With safety tips and emergency numbers memorised, thorough research and an armour of vigilance, navigating through any large city as part of your solo trip can be one of the most empowering and rewarding highlights of your life.
On that note, WalkSafe’s Founder Emma Kay shared her top tips on staying safe while travelling on Airbnb:
- Do your research beforehand and always book your accommodation and any transport transfers in advance
- Inspect locks and windows on arrival to ensure they work
- Ensure your Airbnb profile is up to date, and add an emergency contact directly via the app in the rare event it’s needed
- Consider buying a doorstop alarm and hidden wallet
- Make use of Airbnb’s Solo Traveller Safety feature and message your host in advance of booking to find out about the listing, especially regarding safe and non-safe areas
- Invest in a battery power pack and a travel sim card so you can stay connected
- Stay aware and trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, safely leave the situation

Given that the data is based on women travelling from the UK, it’s interesting to note that Cape Town takes the highest-ranking position of long-haul cities on the list, comfortably sitting above the likes of Sydney at number six, Melbourne at ninth and Toronto at number ten.
Crime aside, with its glistening shores, scenic promises and endless activity options, it’s clear to see why women from the UK and others from all corners of the globe would travel the distance to experience all that the Mother City has to offer.
