South Africans know how to take matters into their own hands. This sentiment echoes true for Cape Town-based high school teacher Miss Erasmus, who gave her Life Sciences classroom a remarkable makeover and funded it herself.

A ‘classroom makeover’ video uploaded to TikTok by Cape Town-based high school teacher Miss Erasmus earlier this week has gone viral, having amassed over 400 000 views.

In the video, Miss Erasmus explains her self-funded mission to give a drab Life Sciences classroom – in desperate need of some TLC – a little love.
With no whiteboards, off-yellow walls, and chaos in the cubbies, the room didn’t reflect the vibrant, organised atmosphere that a space of learning calls for.
This is when Miss Erasmus decided to take matters into her own hands.

With limited paint supplied by the school, the teacher went out of pocket to liven up the classroom in any way she could. The lab received a fresh lick of paint, a set of handmade Gingham-patterned curtains, colourful mats, as well as vibrant posters, signs and labels designed by Miss Erasmus herself.
Commenters on the viral video lauded the government high school teacher for making the time, going through the effort, and pulling the funds from her own pocket for a project that would elevate the learning experience for her pupils.
We agree with a sentiment shared by TikTok user @itsjasonfrazer: ‘South African teachers are not appreciated enough.’
This is especially true for individuals like Miss Erasmus, who will always go the extra mile to make school life fun for learners – as seen in many of her TikTok videos.
