About 800 police officers left their ranks in the Western Cape over the past 11 months, and recruits are ready to fill their positions.

This is according to Western Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembisile Patekile, who revealed that around 2 000 recruits entered the force last year. This group were meant to reduce the shortfall of police officers in the province.

As per the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) Annual Performance Plan 2022/23, the Western Cape needs 11 250 members based on ideal human resource demand.
This fact has become a key component of the Western Cape Government’s goal to devolutionise policing powers, News24 reports. Because of the shortfall, SAPS have had to rely on partnerships between provincial and local governments, says Patekile, particularly in the wake of rising gang violence.
