Bring your furry mates for the sixth Paws on the Promenade – a dog walk fundraiser hosted by the Mdzananda Animal Clinic in Khayelitsha in partnership with Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition. It’s all happening on Sunday, 17 March in Sea Point.
The event will kick off at the Mouille Point lighthouse, after which a five-kilometre route will take you to the Sea Point swimming pool and back. Don’t worry; if you or your pets are feeling a bit worn out, there’s a shorter turnaround point along the way.

‘Our 2020 Paws on the Promenade was a great success with an attendance of 352 dogs,’ says Marcelle du Plessis, fundraising and communications executive and event organiser.
‘On a budget of just R35 00 we raised R48 400. We hope to raise even more funds with this year’s event. This, however, all depends on how many wonderful dogs and humans join us for the walk.’

The Mdzananda Animal Clinic, an NPO in Khayelitsha, cares for around 1 500 animals each month via consultations, hospital care, general and orthopaedic surgeries, ongoing sterilisations, mobile clinics, an animal ambulance, and a haven for homeless pets.
Mdzananda’s focus also extends beyond treatment, prioritising community empowerment and education to foster responsible pet ownership for the future.
‘Our budget keeps growing year on year due to the demand for our services,’ says Du Plessis. ‘It is essential for us to diversify our fundraising. Paws on the Promenade is a great fundraiser but also a magnificent fun-filled event for the whole family.’
Participants can look forward to seeing dogs of all shapes and sizes. ‘People get very creative, dressing themselves and their dogs up in costumes,’ says Du Plessis, adding that some examples include Dalmations in tutus, Dachshunds in hot dog outfits and Pomeranians with bow ties.

Cindy Jacobson, manager of Vondi’s Holistic Pet Nutrition, says the event has been one of their highlights over the past six years. ‘The route is one of the most scenic routes in Cape Town making it a wonderful walk for dogs and owners alike.’
‘We support Mdzananda because of their excellent professionalism and the impact they make in the Khayelitsha community, educating pet owners and treating sick pets that would otherwise have little to no help.’
Everyone is invited to tag along, even those without a furbaby. The first 100 dogs to arrive will receive a goodie bag.
All pet owners are encouraged to dress up in a dog outfit or wear something orange to reflect the Mdzananda Animal Clinic brand.
