The Robben Island Museum’s first 10km memorial run proved to be an incredible event.
The run took place on Saturday, 2 December, and provided participants with the chance to soak up the beauty and allure of the island’s landscape while joining in on commemorating 60 years since the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe on Robben Island.

The theme for the run was ‘Celebrating 60 years of Sobukwe and Mandela’, limited to 1000 runners, the event was organised by Western Province Athletics (WPA) and presented by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC).
WPA President Farouk Meyer expressed pride in collaborating with the Robben Island Museum (RIM) for the inaugural running event.
Meyer emphasised the privilege of associating with an initiative to honour the 60 years of Robert Sobukwe and Nelson Mandela’s presence on the island.
The collaboration aligns with WPA’s strategic goal of promoting sports to develop athletic potential in the Western Cape.
The RIM council has proclaimed 2023 to be ‘The Year of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe,’ marking both the 45th anniversary of Sobukwe’s passing and the 60th anniversary of the pair’s initial imprisonment on Robben Island.
Abigail Thulare, RIM CEO, notes that the event supported RIM’s initiatives to repurpose infrastructure for business, leisure tourism, and heritage and conservation while maintaining a careful balance as a World Heritage Site.
