As part of its ongoing commitment to the well-being of residents and employees, the City of Cape Town’s Health Department is gearing up to celebrate National Nutrition Week from 9 to 16 October 2023.
This year’s theme, ‘Feeling Good with Food – Healthy Eating in the Workplace,’ highlights the crucial connection between nutrition, productivity and overall well-being on the job.
Studies have revealed that employees with unhealthy diets are 66% more likely to experience decreased productivity, while those who rarely exercise face a 50% increased risk of lower productivity.
Smoking further compounds the issue, with smokers facing a 28% higher risk of reduced productivity. Conditions like depression, excess body weight, high blood pressure and elevated cholesterol levels also contribute to lost productivity.

To address these challenges, the City of Cape Town emphasises the importance of healthy eating in the workplace. A healthy eating plan involves a balanced mix of foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat-free/low-fat dairy products, while minimising saturated fats, added sugars and salt.
The goal is to encourage employees to make mindful food choices aligned with healthy eating guidelines and be conscious of portion sizes.
By promoting healthy eating habits, the City aims to foster a healthier, more productive workforce and create a workplace culture that thrives on vitality.
During National Nutrition Week, the City encourages communities and employees alike to embrace the significance of healthy eating, make informed food choices and incorporate nutritious options into daily routines. Together, they can contribute to a healthier and happier workplace where everyone can truly ‘feel good with food.’
Employees can discuss nutrition, dietary concerns and healthier lifestyle choices with the medical staff at any City clinic.
