A 73-year-old man died at the Witsand beach in the Western Cape on Sunday, 16 January. Reports suggest that the man’s lifeless body was discovered floating in the water by bystanders.
According to News 24, the National Sea Rescue Institute’s (NSRI), emergency services were dispatched to the beach after the man’s body was found. NSRI Witsand coxswain Thys Carstens indicated that after the body was discovered in the water and a local doctor tried to resuscitate the man, but he was later declared dead at the scene.
Carstens went on to say that it is believed the man may have suffered from a medical condition. In the meantime, the body has been handed over to the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services as police continue with their investigation.

Meanwhile, the NSRI will on Monday, 17 January continue their search for a teenager who disappeared while swimming at Blythedale Beach on Saturday. According to reports, the boy reportedly got caught in a rip current.
The latest drownings reported is part of several fatal drowning incidents reported by the NSRI since the beginning of the new year.
