A 35-year-old Western Cape attorney was detained after it was claimed that he offered a prosecutor R50 000 to file arguments in his client’s favour or make the case ‘disappear’.

On Friday, the Bellville-based Serious Corruption Investigation Team arrested advocate Phuti Given Mothemane for acts of corruption.
It is alleged that, on 23 September 2022, Mothemane approached a member of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and offered them R50 000 to file representations in favour of his client or to make the State’s case disappear.
A warrant of arrest was issued and executed by the Serious Corruption Investigation Team.

‘The accused made his first appearance in the Bellville Regional Court on 8 September,’ said Hawk’s spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Vukubi. ‘He is out on R5000 bail and the next court date is set for 9 October for the Regional Court.’
Meanwhile, the provincial head of the Hawks in the Western Cape, Major General Makgato, has welcomed the arrest by the team and further reiterated that no one was above the law. He added that the DPCI would continue to root out any criminal elements in our society.
