Any avocado lover worth their salt knows just how expensive grabbing an avo out of season can be. I‘ve personally closed my eyes and begrudgingly handed my debit card to the cashier, hoping that the R70 price tag would miraculously decrease, writes Cape Town Etc‘s Lynn Cupido.
Alas, it never does, but I’d {reluctantly} put myself through the entire ordeal again just to ensure that I get my creamy “ fix.”
Well, gird your loins, my fellow avo lovers, because there may be some good news on the horizon. We all know that South Africa’s avocado season is between mid-February to late October each year, usually made obvious by the fact that we’re paying pennies for our favourite fruit. However, a steady supply could be on its way thanks to a potential deal between Tanzania and South Africa.
But don’t start jumping for joy just yet. While the supply of green gold is expected to hit our shelves in December, according to IOL, an agreement relating to avoiding produce pests and diseases still needs to be reached between the two countries before the product can be shipped.
“At the moment they (Tanzania) can’t bring them (avocados) to the country because (of) what they call the phytosanitary agreement – the agreement between the two countries with regards to managing of pests and diseases – that first needs to be signed before they can be brought into the country (South Africa),” says CEO of the South African Avocado Growers’ Association (SAAGA) Derek Donkin.
South African consumers often spend the offseason munching on avos from Spain – and we all know how well that suits our pockets – but receiving an extra supply of this creamy goodness from Tanzania will ensure that we’ll be spending a bit less.
Here’s hoping our avocado dreams are about to come true!
