During Saturday evening patrols in Steenberg, officers spotted a driver dangerously swerving on Allenby Drive. After interviewing the driver, who showed signs of intoxication, a breathalyser test revealed a reading of 1.18mg/l, more than three times the legal limit of 0.24mg/l.

At around 2:30am, officers were stopped by a motorist, who informed them that she had nearly been hijacked on Britten Road. Upon reaching the location of the suspect matching the motorist’s description, he fled and discarded something onto the roof of a nearby structure.
‘Officers managed to chase down and apprehend the suspect and then set about recovering the unknown object,’ says JP Smith, the City’s Mayco member for safety and security.
‘This then turned out to be a replica firearm. The suspect was arrested and handed over for further investigation and prosecution at Steenberg SAPS as well.’
On Sunday evening, law enforcement attended a noise complaint on Barnard Street. Despite repeated requests to lower the volume, the resident refused to provide details, which is a legal requirement.
‘At this point, the crowd that gathered grew riotous and attempted to free the detainee while assaulting the officers,’ says Smith.
As a result, two additional individuals were arrested on charges of interfering with officers, assault and resisting arrest.
‘Our enforcement activities continue around the Steenberg and Lavender Hill areas, the same across all other areas established as gang strongholds,’ Smith adds.
‘It cannot be however that while communities plead for assistance from Law Enforcement, there are those in the community that blatantly defy other enforcement initiatives and then, who actively challenge and physically assault enforcement staff while in the course of their duties.’
