A trial that was running for almost five years finally came to an end as Melvin Volkwyn was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Western Cape High Court for murdering one-year-old Orderick Lucas in May of 2017.
The 42-year-old Volkwyn was found guilty of Orderick’s murder in August already but he maintained his innocence throughout the trial, News24 reports.

During the trial, it was reported that Orderick’s death could not be determined as his body was already decomposing when it was recovered from a drain in Wittebol Street, Melton Rose, in April 2019.

Acting Judge Nolundi Nyati, who handed down the sentence described Volwkyn as a “monster” and said that he deserved a heavier sentence.
Nyati further mentioned that the accused discussed himself like a “wolf in sheep’s clothing”, pretending to be innocent while he was abusing the toddler, IOL reported.
“Orderick was a one-year-and-ten-month-old baby, needing love and care, and instead he suffered a slow death at Volkwyn’s hands,” Judge Nyati was quoted as saying.
