Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has announced that over 3 500 road arrests were made over the festive season.
Drivers were apprehended for various offences. RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane told The Citizen that transgressions included drunk driving, driving without licences or violating public transport permit requirements.
Comprehensive statistics including fatalities on the road during the festive season are yet to be announced.
“Last year’s festive season, revealed that road fatalities increased in seven provinces and declined in two.”
“The Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal are the only provinces that recorded a decline in fatalities, while the Northern Cape and Western Cape recorded the highest percentage increases in fatalities,” said Zwane.
