According to Fire and Rescue Services spokesperson Jermaine Carelse, four residents sustained burn wounds but refused further medical treatment after an on-site assessment, while a fifth civilian was taken to hospital after suffering a seizure.
Carelse added that three firefighters also sustained burn wounds during the blaze, two of whom were hospitalised.
This comes after fire crews from various stations, municipalities and volunteer groups have been battling a blaze in Simon’s Town and surrounds since 9am on Tuesday.
‘These members risk their own lives, day after day, putting their own safety in the line to protect the lives of others,’ said Smith.
The fire, which was brought under control, was aggravated by strong winds and spread rapidly through the informal settlement, reported Happening News SA.
As a result, approximately 400 residents were displaced and around 80 structures were destroyed, said Disaster Risk Management (DRM) spokesperson Charlotte Powell after a fire assessment was conducted this morning.
Powell added that Gift of the Givers and SASSA will be providing humanitarian assistance to affected persons who are currently staying with family or friends.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.
‘The strong winds over the next few days are a catalyst in what can become runaway disasters,’ added Smith. ‘We ask that everyone play their part and be responsible when making fires within these severe weather conditions.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued Yellow level 2 and 3 weather warnings for damaging winds, valid until midnight on Tuesday.
The level 3 warning is in place for various parts of the province including the metropole.
