Police in Cape Town have deployed additional officers to try and bring calmness to areas that have seen an increase in gang-related shootings over the festive period.
A number of people have been killed and wounded in various parts of the city, this includes a two-year-old boy who was shot in the face during a gang shootout in Belhar on Monday, December 27.
According to police spokesperson FC van Wyk, the two-year-old Utmaan Taliep was struck in the face when alleged gang members opened fire on each other in Sunata Way.

In Lavender Hill, a 15-year-old boy was also killed during a shooting incident on Monday, while a 14-year-old boy was injured in the same incident.
Meanwhile, members of the Provincial Extortion Task Team arrested a 27-year-old suspect for the possession of a prohibited firearm and ammunition in Spreeu Street, Hopland Langebaan on Tuesday, December 28.
The police’s FC van Wyk said officers received information of a firearm at the premises and followed up, where they discovered an AK 47 automatic rifle with ammunition.
Van Wyk said the suspect is due to make a court appearance today, 29 December 2021 in the Vredenburg Magistrates Court on the mentioned charges.
