A 42-year-old man was arrested by the South African Police Services (SAPS) in Cape Town after he was caught with drugs valued at R1.29 million, as well as a substantial amount of cash on him.

SAPS said members of the Milnerton SAPS’ Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) responded to information regarding a vehicle transporting drugs that was set for delivery to Brooklyn. The members placed themselves strategically and observed until they spotted the vehicle approaching.
SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie said, ‘The vehicle was pulled over and brought to a halt where after the members ensued with a search of the driver and the vehicle. The members found a substantial quantity of tik and mandrax tablets.’

Mojie said the suspect tried to evade but members in pursuit caught up with him quickly. The suspect threw some house keys away in the melee, which was not found but the suspect was arrested and escorted to his address where they searched his premises.
‘During the search of the premises, the members discovered a further 18 968 mandrax tablets valued at around R1.29 million, which were seized. Further investigation took the members to an address in Plumstead where they found a substantial amount of cash which is suspected to be the proceeds of the drug trade. The money and drugs were confiscated.’ Mojie said.
The 42-year-old Nigerian suspect will appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ court on Friday, 23 February 2024 on a charge of dealing in drugs.
